We’ve already got a few tech articles under our belt using our Torred 2007 Dodge Magnum SRT8. Since we’re kind of catching our breath this month on our busy editorial schedule for the project, we thought we’d take a moment to let you get to know the Maulin’ Magnum and her race crew a little better.
The Maulin’ Magnum (Maggie, as she’s known to her friends), was a factory stock car this time last year. Well, almost factory, she did have a JBA cat-back exhaust, an AFE cold air intake under the hood and a Diablosport Predator tune in the PCM. But other than that, she was the same car that left the assembly line in July of 2007. Maggie came loaded with all the options (Group I, II, and III) so she has a nav system, upgraded stereo and a sunroof and the weight that comes with them.
Crew chief Richard Kratz and MoparMax test driver Alex Rogeo started campaigning the Maulin’ Magnum in the NHRA Summit Series at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in March of 2011. At the time the only “racing” mod was a set of rims with Mickey Thompson Street E/T drag radials for reliable traction. But plans were being made and the car started racing in the Pro class because we knew that before the season was out she’d be too fast for Sportsman. Within a short time Maggie appeared at her first Pacific Street Car Association (PSCA) race and her first West Coast Hot Rod Association (WCHRA) race.
Maggie is fed and cared for by Richard Kratz, your writer. Richard is an ex-FAA licensed aircraft mechanic with a background in engineering and computer technology. He began racing motorcycles at age eight, circle track cars at sixteen, sports cars soon after that, and even Landspeed turbocharged motorcycles at El Mirage dry lake and the Bonneville Salt Flats. Richard has suffered from insomnia his entire life, rarely sleeping more than four hours a night. In the late hours, when everyone else is asleep, he reads—perhaps consumes is a better word—books, magazines, and newspapers and surfs the web looking for white papers, studies, and research that tickles his fancy at the moment. Richard brings his engineering methodology, racing experience and love of research to project Maulin’ Magnum.
Alex “the Car Girl” Rogeo is about as unique a driving talent as you’ll find. She grew up in her dad’s auto repair shop and was driving ATVs shortly after she could walk. She is a highly talented and trained singer, having performed Broadway style musicals from the East Coast to the West—when you hear her sing the Star Spangled Banner it will send chills down your spine. She’s smart, justifiably proud of her 3.94 college GPA as she majors in Theater at a Cal State University. Alex is also an actress, comfortable on stage or in front of a camera, either film or still, because in her “spare” time Alex models. She usually models next to a car and she likes it that way. At the PSCA Showdown at Sundown race in Las Vegas this past July, Alex not only made it to the quarter-finals in the Bracket-1 class, she grabbed runner up in the bikini contest between rounds for good measure. She may have 5w-40 in her veins, but she’s every bit a lady and this singing/modeling/drag racing/actress is a remarkable young woman.
