Project Fighting Fish: Dyno testing our 410

f you have been following our pal Zak Hawthorne and his quest to make his ’65 Cuda into a bad street, strip and road course machine then you already know that he opted to build a 410-inch wedge for it. In the January issue of Mopar Max we showed the buildup of the engine and now, after a nearly three-month wait, we got to take the engine over to our buddies at Westech Performance and put Zak’s engine on their dyno.

Before we go to the test we want to thank Bill Tichnor at Holley for paying for the Dyno time. As grateful as we are for that we want to tell you what ballsy guys they are at Holley. We wanted to try several of his competitors’ carbs on this engine and we told Bill that. He told us to go ahead. He had enough confidence in his product to take that chance knowing we would print the results no matter what they were. Damn few manufacturers these days are willing to take that kind of chance and foot the bill too. We really appreciate what he did.

What follows are the charts and spread sheets from all of the Dyno tests that we did in the time allotted. We ran every size carb from a 650 cfm to a 950 cfm. We also ran back-to back comparison tests using a 750 cfm Holley carb and a750 cfm  Quick Fuel Technology  carb. What we found was that both of the 750 cfm carbs we tested made just about the same torque and horsepower. Ditto with the 850 carbs from both. We had a 750 carb from Barry Grant that we intended to run also but just flat ran out of time and were unable complete the tests.

You can read the dyno sheets and make your own judgment as to what carb you want. We’re going with the Holley on this engine and are going to use the 750 Quick Fuel on a 355 inch small block with Vortec heads we have built.
