The Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis is one of the biggest combination car shows and drag races in the Midwest. According to the Goodguys’ Director of Public Relations, John Drummond, there were about 3,000 vehicles entered in the car show and 300 drag cars, which included an eight-car qualified field in both the AA/FD and AA/FC classes.

Photographer Chris Haverly’s assignment was to photograph anything and everything that had the Pentastar connected to it. We hope you like this look around the event.

Drag Racing Coverage

There were three parts of the drag racing events where the Pentastar Posse was well represented: The Nostalgia Super Stocker class, the Mopar-bodied and powered, nitro-burning AA Funny Cars and AA Dragsters.

There were 38 Nostalgia Super Stockers on hand at Indy and almost half of them were of the Mopar variety and included both hemi- and wedge-powered entries.

Len Grimsley’s ‘64 Plymouth wagon (above) used a big max-wedge engine of undermined size to make wheels-up 9.50 laps at over 140 mph. The Mopar “land barge” is always entertaining whenever it makes a race in the Midwest.

The second quickest and the absolute fastest Super Stocker on the premises was Paul Rabura’s pristine ’63 Savoy. The Addison, Illinois-based car features a massive 605 cubic inch wedge Mopar under the hood and ran a best of 8.903/152.26 in qualifying.
