Burlington, NC’s Mike McCandless, son of 1970 U.S. Nationals Pro Stock champion Herb McCandless, won the Viper Shootout portion of the 18th annual McBrayer Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep “Mopars at the Rock” event April 11 at Rockingham (NC) Dragway.
Jason Thompson of Jacksonville won the Dakota Shootout, Ty Maitland of Highlands claimed the Quick Diesel title and Jeff Garmon of Griffin, Ga., prevailed in Diesel Pro Street.
In addition to some of the Southeast’s most prominent Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler drag racers, the event also drew more than 100 Chrysler show car entries and played host to a Mopar-themed swap meet.
Dean Sox of Greensboro made exhibition runs in a Sox and Martin reproduction Hemi Plymouth Duster against the Hemi Super Stock Barracuda of Bob Reed of Salisbury. Dean is the son of the late Ronnie Sox, winner of 25 national events and a two-time Pro Stock World Champion.
Other race winners were Jim Chandler of Hope Mills in Top Eliminator, Art Laselle of Fayetteville in Footbrake, Tim Burchette of Winston-Salem in Diesel ET and James Lowe of Colfax in Trophy Street.
