Each year at Irwindale Dragstrip, Mooneyes throws their Christmas Party. There were some Mopars taking part this year and here’s a look at some of them.
The American Nostalgia West cars took a few laps down the eighth-mile strip. Joel Miner’s “Wedge Express II” ran 6.61/102. Joel is the son of Dick Miner, who ran the original Vanleeuwen-Neal & Miner “Wedge Express”, a max wedge ’64 Plymouth that still competes in NHRA Super Stock D/A.
Wedge II was just completed in April of 2008. It has a bench seat, original steering wheel and period-correct gauges along with a fairly small tire. It has an original cross ram on top of a wedge engine. To date it has run best times of 10.50s in the quarter and 6.60s in the eighth.
“My uncle, Willy Vanleeuwen, passed in 1989,” Joel explained, “and this is a tribute to him and my dad, Dick Miner, and family friend Mike Neal, who built and beat on cars like these long before I was born and had the kind of garage innovation that could win class racing and national championships with little money and a lot of know-how.”
Well, that’s one way to heat the tires of this 340-powered ‘Cuda.
