Hagan adds hemp to his Virginia cattle farm

Last year the state of Virginia passed a Farm Bill that allowed hemp to be grown in the state for purposes other than research, and one of the first to invest in the plant on a large scale is drag racer and cattle farmer, Matt Hagan.

"They say we're going to be one of the biggest in the state of Virginia and that means we're taking one of the biggest risks in the state of Virginia," he said. Hagan reportedly has invested a million dollars in the project, according to television station WDBJ.

TruHarvest Farms grows a genetically modified hemp (yes, it’s a relative of marijuana) that has a high concentration of cannabidiol (CBD) and low of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is found in many products these days to relieve pain and anxiety without the “high” of THC.

Hagan, driver of the Mopar Dodge charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car for Don Schumacher Racing, and John Straw, who oversees the hemp operation, are working with Virginia Tech to increase research in the state that formerly was known for tobacco cultivation.

Hemp has been grown for about 10,000 years and there is a history of hemp growing in the U.S. south. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison along with Benjamin Franklin grew the plant for use in the production of rope, thread, canvas and other industrial uses.  [06/28/19]

Pacific Raceways announces future name change, improvements

Pacific Raceways will be the site of massive renovations and innovations in the next several years. The facility combines a 2.25-mile road course with a professional-caliber drag strip in Kent, Washington, just twenty minutes south of Seattle.

Soon to be known as Pacific Motorsports Park, the track and the grounds will enjoy roughly $2M in improvements. Additionally, the site will become home to the new Pacific Innovations Center. This development will entail nearly $25,000,000 in build-out of 200,000 sq. ft. of prototype manufacturing and garage space. The first phase of garages and mixed-use space range from 1,000 to 40,000 sq. ft. in size.

The first phase of development has already begun—the historic road course is getting repaved now, and the plan is to finish in three years. This fall, construction of the innovation center and motorsport park will begin. Though the plans for the future aren’t yet finalized, the later phases include a completely new and separate drag strip, a retail center, and additions to the motorsports club and innovation center.

The drag strip is host to the annual NHRA Northwest Nationals this Aug. 2-4.  [06/28/19]

Beard takes Plymouth Volare to IHRA win

Three-time IHRA World Champion Michael Beard returned to the winners circle Saturday, June 8, at the IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular event at Keystone Raceway Park in New Alexandria, PA.

Beard from Galloway, OH, flexed his Mopar muscle, driving his 1980 Plymouth Volare to the Mod division victory. He won on a holeshot with a .019 reaction time to best JT Harrold from Pittsburgh. Beard posted a 6.604-second pass at 101.10 mph against a 6.61 dial-in. Harrold in a 1971 Chevy Nova went 6.524 at 104.80 against a 6.53 dial-in.   [06/28/19]

FCA withdraws Renault merger offer

Fiat Chrysler withdrew a $35 billion merger offer for France's Renault on June 5, abruptly calling off what would have been a landmark deal to create the world's third-biggest automaker.

Renault directors had failed to reach a conclusion during a board meeting, but said they would continue to review the proposal after French officials asked them to postpone the vote. FCA, however, nixed the deal, blaming the French government.

"It has become clear that the political conditions in France do not currently exist for such a combination to proceed successfully," Fiat said, adding that it remains convinced that the plan was compelling and carefully balanced.  [06/28/19]

Johnson wins Funny Car at Joliet

Tommy Johnson Jr. piloted his Make-A-Wish Foundation Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car to victory for his first win since the Auto Club NHRA Finals in 2017 in an explosive final round Sunday, June 2, at the 22nd annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Johnson experienced an engine explosion just before crossing the finish line with a pass of 4.175 seconds at 229.86 mph. He defeated Robert Hight’s 4.438 at 202.55 to secure his 16th Funny Car win and second at Route 66 Raceway.

“It makes your heart stop for a second because you’re sitting there coasting and you know he’s got to be there somewhere,” said Johnson of his nail-biter of a final round. “It’s the longest coasting you’ve ever done in your life. You’re thinking ‘come on, get there,’ and then I saw the light come on and I was just so thrilled for the guys and (team sponsor) Doug Chandler. He continued this program in his wife, Terry Chandler’s, honor so I’m happy we could get this win for him. We’ve been close a lot – six times we were there in the final and couldn’t get it done, so it was nice to finally do that.”   [06/28/19]

McClay takes second Comp win of season in Mopar dragster

Scott McClay of Tehachapi, CA, got his second Competition Eliminator win of the year at the Divisional event at Auto Club Raceway in Fontana, CA. The builder of TH200 transmissions started the year with a win at the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona.

This is the only Mopar-powered dragster in Comp class competition. The engine is built by Pro Stock racer Jason Line.    [06/29/19]

Capps victorious at NHRA Virginia Nationals

After a slow start to the season, Ron Capps got his second consecutive victory on Sunday, May 19, at the NHRA Virginia Nationals. It was the 62nd Funny Car win for Capps and the first at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Capps was the only Funny Car driver to dip into the three-second range turning in a 3.997 ET against first-round opponent Jim Campbell, who smoked the tires.

Capps then came out on top of a pedalfest with current point leader Robert Hight (near lane), only to meet teammate Tommy Johnson Jr., where both cars had trouble. Capps lost a cylinder while Johnson went up in smoke and never recovered. [06/28/19]

Schneider retires as Victory NSS director; will continue driving

Chris and Becky Schneider. Behind every good man is an even better woman.

Chris Schneider founded the Victory Nostalgia Super Stock series 12 years ago, but he has announced he will be retiring as Director at the end of this season. [06/28/19]

Schneider will continue to drive John Troxel’s “Brutus” Funny Car (we’ll forgive Troxel that it’s a Mustang). Schneider says he hopes to also compete in the Victory NSS series next year.

Schneider did an incredible job getting the Midwest mostly-Mopar series up and running and continuing to grow. Keeping racers, track managers, and sponsors all happy is quite an accomplishment. Someone is going to have some very large shoes to fill. A job well done, sir. [06/28/19]

We say so long and thanks to editor, Richard Kratz

Richard Kratz is founder of Liquid Glow Car Care Products, which continues in business.

And speaking of having some large shoes to fill, we must note that long-time editor of Mopar Max, Richard Kratz, is retiring from the magazine and from drag racing. He is stepping away to spend more time with his family and concentrate on health issues.

We appreciate all the long hours and hard work, Richard. It has been a pleasure working with you.

Managing Editor, Kay Burk, will step into the void for the time being.   [06/28/19]
