Mopar Hemi Challenge returns for 17th year at U.S. Nationals

Jimmy Daniels (far lane) took last year’s Mopar Hemi Challenge win over a red-lighting Stephen Hebert.

The Mopar HEMI® Challenge will return for its 17th consecutive season at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis on Aug. 30-Sept. 4. Mopar-powered Super Stock/Automatic-HEMI (SS/AH) Sportsman class competitors will go head-to-head on the quarter-mile at Lucas Oil Raceway in original Mopar package cars — 1968 HEMI-powered Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda machines.

The winner of the specialty event earns a $15,000 prize and a unique HEMI Challenge trophy. The Mopar HEMI Challenge also provides a cash prize payout to the top 16 finishers competing in elimination rounds. All entrants will receive special Mopar HEMI Challenge decals, hats and posters.

Maple Grove kicks off annual Make-A-Wish promotion

Last year Maple Grove Raceway raised $10,000 for Make-A-Wish during this promotion. Tommy Johnson Jr. and his team’s sponsor, the late Terry Chandler, are at left.

Maple Grove Raceway is teaming up with Tommy Johnson, Jr., NHRA driver of the Don Schumacher Racing Make-A-Wish Dodge Funny Car, to make local children’s dreams come true. Every year the organization raises money to grant the wishes of children diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition.

This year between August 16th and September 1st Maple Grove Raceway will donate ten dollars from every adult ticket sold to the Dodge NHRA Nationals, which will be held September 21-24, to Make-A-Wish. All dollars raised during this promotion go to the Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia Make-A-Wish Foundation.[08/15/17]

Johnson runners-up at Mopar Mile-High Nationals

Mopar-powered driver Tommy Johnson Jr. went to the final round of the Funny Car class during the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway July 29, however, he came up just shy of providing a birthday present for Mopar as the brand celebrated its 80th anniversary at the picturesque mountainside track outside of Denver.

Mopar still claimed a win at the brand’s premier event, with four-time Stock Eliminator world champion Kevin Helms bringing home a Wally in the category in his 2013 Dodge Challenger.

The runner-up finish for Johnson and the Mopar-powered Top Fuel dragster driven by Leah Pritchett snapped a streak of 14 consecutive event wins for Mopar HEMI® power in both Nitro categories dating back to the end of last season, and a run of 10 consecutive victories in the Funny Car class.

Johnson first drove past Mopar teammate Ron Capps in a re-match of the final round from two weeks ago at Route 66 Raceway, with Johnson winning this battle on a holeshot. Johnson next bested Jonnie Lindberg on a clean pass as the Swedish driver struggled to find traction. The Make-A-Wish team then knocked out fellow Dodge driver Jim Campbell on their quickest pass of the weekend in the semis as Campbell got out of the groove, allowing Johnson to reach the final.

None of the other DSR Mopar Funny Cars were able to advance past the second round. After a tough qualifying effort that led to the squad starting the day in the No. 15 position, Matt Hagan and the Mopar 80th/Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T team bested John Force in round one despite Hagan suffering an explosion as he crossed the finish line. Hagan’s team thrashed to make the second round but their day came to an end at the hands of Cruz Pedregon. Still, Hagan qualified for the year-end Countdown to the Championship with his efforts at Bandimere.

Jack Beckman and the Infinite Hero team put their Mopar Dodge Funny Car past Alexis DeJoria on a side-by-side run in the first round, but were bested by Hight in round two after Beckman was forced to pedal around the 200-foot mark.

Kayla Mozeris of Phoenix was named the Super Stock Dodge Top Finisher of the 38th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals after advancing to the third round in her 1993 GT/KA Dodge Daytona.

In Pro Stock, Mopar-powered Allen Johnson was looking for his eighth win at Bandimere in his Marathon Petroleum Dodge Dart. However, Johnson’s day ended early after a close first-round loss to Bo Butner. Johnson had advanced to an amazing ten consecutive final rounds at Bandimere.  [08/15/17]

Chrysler supports ‘Sesame Street’

Chrysler today announced that it is now a proud sponsor and supporter of "Sesame Street," a commitment that includes supporting the show on PBS and new original content on Chrysler’s digital platforms.

"'Sesame Street' has a powerful connection with families and this partnership allows the Chrysler brand to support their work around the world," said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – North America. "As a trusted family brand, we were looking for a like-minded partner who possessed a thoughtful and engaging approach. With our all-new Chrysler Pacifica minivan, we wanted to help educate parents about its unprecedented 115 safety, security and technology innovations – and who better than 'Sesame Street,' which has been reaching and educating families for almost 50 years."

“Partnering with Chrysler will help us extend our reach in new and creative ways, and support Sesame Workshop's nonprofit mission to help kids grow smarter, stronger and kinder," said Steve Youngwood, Chief Operating Officer of Sesame Workshop. “We’re thrilled to work with a brand that stands for a deep commitment to families and children.”

In addition to sponsoring the show on PBS, Chrysler is creating a multimedia campaign that will pair Sesame characters and the Chrysler Pacifica and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid in 10 co-branded videos for parents that launched on July 17 across the brand’s digital and social channels. The campaign was created and produced in partnership with Mediabrands Society, the social AOR for FCA US LLC.   [08/15/17]

Enhancements added to Dodge Charger Pursuit for law enforcement

FCA US LLC has enhanced the capabilities of its Officer Protection Package and has extended the program to 2018 Dodge Charger Pursuit law enforcement vehicles.

The Officer Protection Package is designed to increase an officer’s situational awareness when parked and working inside the Charger Pursuit.

First offered by FCA US and InterMotive Inc. on the 2017 Charger Pursuit, the Officer Protection Package will continue to be available at no cost to U.S. law enforcement agencies in the 2018 model year.

The Officer Protection Package uses InterMotive’s Surveillance Mode Module™ with FCA’s Fleet Safety Group technology – ParkSense rear park assist system, ParkView rear backup camera, and Rear Cross Path detection – to alert officers when movement at the rear of the vehicle is detected.

The Rear Cross Path detection is new to the package for the 2018 model year. This system warns drivers of lateral traffic when backing out of parking spaces. When InterMotive’s module is activated – by simply pressing the Aux 1 button on the steering wheel – these additional sensors will be turned on, significantly increasing the area monitored and providing additional security for the officer.

If and when the sensors detect motion, a chime will sound to alert the officer of potential danger in the area. The officer can immediately see what is behind the vehicle via the camera monitor. At the discretion of the law enforcement agency, the tripped sensors can initiate any or all of the following: a signal for the doors to lock, front windows to roll up, reverse lights to turn on and tail lights to flash, all automatically, giving the officer a few extra seconds to react to the situation.

The Officer Protection Package, provided by FCA US and InterMotive and easily installed (plug and play) by the law enforcement agency, is available effective immediately on all 2018 Charger Pursuit U.S. orders.  [08/15/17]
